We are looking for an editor/project manager to assist in the day-to-day function of Kirkus Editorial, the book editing division of Kirkus Media, the publishers of Kirkus Reviews. Ideal candidates will have experience in a managing editor role at a major publishing company, as well as excellent time management and communication skills. All candidates should have a deep understanding of The Chicago Manual of Style, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Microsoft Excel. Candidates must be comfortable in a digital environment, handling various file transfer processes and innovating Kirkus’s current content management system to best process various publishing projects. Must be able to perform quality control on a variety of editing and copywriting services, and give actionable notes to a large team of remote freelancers. Must interface with clients to assess editorial needs and then communicate client expectations to the team. Must produce reports for accounting purposes. Candidates must be flexible, innovative self-starters who are comfortable working under multiple deadlines. The manager of Kirkus Editorial will report to the director of Kirkus Editorial.

Requirements:

• A deep knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary
• Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel
• Ability to handle an array of digital files via FTP and file-transfer sites
• Capacity to manage a pool of freelancers and tight deadlines
• Ability to recruit editors and copywriters with experience at major publishing houses
• A keen eye for detail to perform quality control checks on editing and copywriting projects and to ensure the proper execution of a variety of editorial services
• Superior communication skills to give actionable notes/feedback to freelancers; interface with clients to assess editorial needs; and communicate client expectations to team
